Western Australia is charting a new course toward becoming a world leader in science and technology with the development of a comprehensive 10-Year Science and Technology Plan. The ambitious blueprint will guide the state's research and technology goals for the next decade, aiming to establish WA as a global hub for scientific discovery, development, and innovation.
The plan will focus on the state's strengths in areas such as radio astronomy, space operations, remote technologies, marine science, medical technology, and food security. It will also explore opportunities in sustainable living, energy transition, and advanced manufacturing. These efforts aim to diversify and decarbonise the economy, improve quality of life, and address future challenges.
A key feature of the plan will be its emphasis on capitalising on WA’s unique advantages, attracting investment, and fostering talent to support long-term growth. The plan will also acknowledge the contributions of First Nations peoples to scientific advancements, aiming to enhance future engagement and collaboration in scientific research.
In addition, the 10-Year Science and Technology Plan will work in tandem with existing strategies such as the "Western Australia's Innovation Strategy," which outlines a vision to position WA as a renowned global center for invention, innovation, and impact.
Consultation with a broad range of stakeholders, including industry leaders, research institutions, universities, and Aboriginal groups, will begin in September 2023, with the final plan expected to be published by mid-2024.
