Victoria’s Water Sector Moves to 100 Percent Renewable Electricity

All 18 water corporations in Victoria are on track to power their operations with 100 percent renewable electricity by the end of 2025. Many are also aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2030, ahead of the original 2035 target.

Water corporations have already cut emissions by 42 percent. This is equal to removing around 136,000 cars from the roads. These efforts help reduce operational costs and keep water and sewer services affordable for the community.

The sector has invested in major renewable energy projects. One example is the Nhill renewable energy facility. It produces 70 percent of the power used at 330 sites run by Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water.

Twelve water corporations have formed Zero Emissions Water. This group buys renewable electricity from the Kiamal Solar Farm. Bulk purchasing gives them a cheaper price than buying alone.

The shift to renewables supports reliable and low-cost services. It also demonstrates the water sector's leadership in climate action.
