Support for Farmers Facing Drought Conditions in Victoria’s South West

Farmers in Victoria's south-west are set to benefit from a new $13.53 million support package aimed at helping them manage the impacts of ongoing drought conditions. The package is designed to assist farmers in 11 local government areas—ranging from Glenelg to Golden Plains—by providing on-farm infrastructure grants and resources to improve long-term resilience to dry conditions.

With some areas experiencing the lowest rainfall on record, the package includes a $12.1 million investment to help farmers upgrade essential water infrastructure, such as pipes, tanks, troughs, and storage facilities for grain and fodder. Eligible farmers can receive co-contribution grants of up to $5,000 to support these critical improvements, helping ensure access to water and feed during prolonged dry spells.

In addition to infrastructure grants, the package includes $1.43 million for counseling and advisory services to assist farmers facing financial and emotional stress. A dedicated Drought Regional Coordinator will be appointed to ensure that support reaches farmers efficiently.

The program builds on existing resources, such as workshops, advice from the National Centre for Farmer Health, and information on Agriculture Victoria’s website, to further equip farmers with the tools they need to withstand and recover from drought.

This investment forms part of a broader effort to help farmers become more resilient to future droughts and build sustainable irrigation practices.
