Smart Meters Now in Three-Quarters of Tasmanian Premises

Tasmania has made significant progress in the rollout of smart meters, with over three-quarters of premises now equipped with the technology, according to a recent report from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). At the end of August 2024, 79% of homes and businesses in Tasmania had smart meters installed, placing the state second in Australia for the highest installation rate, just behind Victoria.

Smart meters provide a range of benefits for both consumers and electricity networks. They eliminate the need for manual meter readings and estimates, helping to prevent bill shock. Consumers now have near real-time access to their electricity usage, allowing them to better manage their energy costs. Additionally, smart meters give customers the option to switch to a time-of-use tariff, potentially saving money depending on their energy consumption patterns.

Tasmania’s energy prices are already among the lowest in the country, but the ongoing smart meter rollout is part of a broader strategy to support consumers, particularly those facing cost-of-living challenges. By enhancing the efficiency and visibility of the energy network, smart meters are expected to play a key role in ensuring affordable electricity rates for Tasmanians in the future.

The full rollout of smart meters across Tasmania is expected to be completed by 2026, helping to further strengthen the state's energy system and support sustainable, affordable energy access for all residents.
