Construction on key road upgrades across New South Wales will begin within weeks as part of a $128 million initiative to support the rollout of Renewable Energy Zones (REZs). The upgrades aim to facilitate the transport of large-scale wind, solar, and battery infrastructure from the Port of Newcastle to the Central-West Orana REZ near Dubbo.
The project’s first stage will focus on 19 key locations, improving road access between the port and renewable energy construction sites. Works will include road widening, drainage improvements, utility adjustments, and the addition of turning lanes to handle oversized transport loads safely and efficiently.
An Australian company, BMD Constructions Pty Ltd, has been awarded the contract for this stage, which will create approximately 60 local construction jobs. Construction is expected to start shortly, with many upgrades projected to be completed by the end of the year.
Specific sites for early works include:
- Selwyn Street, Mayfield North
- Lonsdale Street, Jerrys Plains
- Vinegaroy Road, Cassilis
- Barneys Reef Road, Dunedoo
Once completed, the upgrades will not only support the renewable energy sector but also benefit the broader community by enhancing road safety, reducing delays, and improving transport reliability across regional NSW.
This work is part of the broader Port to REZ Program, which will continue assessing and delivering further upgrades to support the state’s energy transition.
