Four major firming projects under Tender Round 2 of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap are now complete and operational. These include three battery energy storage systems (BESS) and one virtual power plant, collectively capable of powering around 400,000 households during peak demand periods. The projects represent over $1.8 billion in private investment and were delivered by AGL, Akaysha Energy, Iberdrola Australia, and Enel X.
The new infrastructure helps maintain grid reliability as older coal-fired power stations retire, providing downward pressure on energy prices. Key facilities include the Liddell BESS in Muswellbrook (500 MW), Orana BESS in Montefiores (415 MW), Smithfield BESS (65 MW), and a statewide virtual power plant offering 95 MW of demand response. Construction of these projects supported more than 1,500 jobs, contributing to regional economic activity while strengthening the state’s clean energy capabilities.
