The initiative will allow motorists to securely store their licence on their smartphone using the Service Victoria app or the upcoming My VicRoads app. The trial, which will begin in July following registration via the Service Victoria or VicRoads websites in June, will allow full licence holders in Ballarat to participate and provide valuable feedback.
The digital licence will incorporate state-of-the-art security measures and provide real-time updates to reflect changes, such as new licence conditions or address updates. It will also provide enhanced convenience by automatically indicating if a licence has been suspended or revoked while still allowing it to be used as proof of identity or age when inactive. The licence will include a secure QR code that can be easily scanned by authorities, businesses and other licence validators, reducing the risk of fraudulent use.
Throughout the trial, the State Government will actively seek feedback from motorists, retailers, licensed premises, Victoria Police and other organisations where a driver's licence is used for identification. This collaborative approach will ensure the accessibility and security of personal information, with privacy being the highest priority.
It is important to note that only full licence holders will be able to participate in the initial pilot, with learners and probationary drivers still required to carry their physical licences. The Government will work with key business and industry leaders to prepare for the statewide rollout of the digital driver's licence, ensuring a smooth transition for Victorian workers and businesses.
