A major upgrade to a plastics recycling facility in Dandenong South is setting a new benchmark for sustainability in Victoria. Martogg, one of Australia’s largest privately-owned plastics recycling businesses, has invested in cutting-edge optical sorting technology that transforms plastic waste into high-quality recycled materials used for food packaging.
The expanded facility now processes 40,000 tonnes of post-consumer PET plastic annually, producing 17,300 tonnes of food-grade recycled plastic flakes each year. This is the equivalent of recycling more than 800 million PET bottles, which are repurposed into new packaging products, including beverage bottles, meat trays, and bakery packaging commonly found in supermarkets.
The introduction of optical sorting technology allows the facility to efficiently sort and clean post-consumer plastic containers, ensuring that only high-quality material is used in the production of food-grade recycled pellets. These pellets are essential for manufacturing safe, sustainable packaging solutions.
The expansion has also created 28 new jobs, contributing to local employment and economic growth. Martogg’s investment is part of a broader effort to increase Victoria's capacity to recycle plastic waste, with 13 major recycling projects completed across the state since 2021. These projects have boosted the state’s overall recycling capacity by 80,000 tonnes of plastic per year, with Martogg’s facility alone accounting for more than a quarter of this increase.
As demand for sustainable packaging grows, the facility’s advanced recycling process plays a key role in reducing plastic waste and supporting a circular economy. By turning plastic waste into high-quality recycled materials, the facility helps reduce reliance on virgin plastics, lowering environmental impact and promoting resource conservation.
