CSIRO and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) have launched a new research partnership to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can support sport in Australia. The three-year collaboration focuses on creating an AI roadmap for sports and promoting responsible AI use.
The AI roadmap will show how AI is being used across sports, identify opportunities, and set research priorities. A responsible AI guide and checklist will help sports organisations adopt AI in a fair, transparent, and ethical way.
CSIRO’s Data61 Director, Professor Jon Whittle, said the project aims to support all levels of sport, from participation to elite performance. “The roadmap and responsible AI practices will help improve performance and integrity in Australian sport,” he said.
ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said the partnership will help sports use data and new technologies safely. “This is an opportunity to explore how AI can benefit sport while keeping ethical standards front of mind,” he said.
The research will also identify cross-sport opportunities that use CSIRO’s expertise in data and digital technologies. The results could guide future innovation across Australian sport.
