Up to $3.5 million in grant funding is now available from the Cook Government to strengthen Western Australia's e-waste collection and recycling infrastructure in anticipation of the upcoming ban on landfill disposal of e-waste later this year.
E-waste, which includes waste electrical and electronic equipment, includes items with plugs, batteries or cords that are either broken or unwanted.
A total of $10 million has been allocated for projects to support the collection and processing of e-waste. Initially, $6.5 million has been awarded as part of the first round of e-waste grants.
These grants are for projects that:
- Establish facilities to collect, manage and store e-waste prior to reuse or further processing; or
- Focus on reprocessing and recycling, including helping businesses to purchase and install equipment.
Businesses, local authorities, regional councils and registered charities are eligible to apply for these grants. The deadline for applications is Friday 29 March 2024 and applications can be submitted at dwer-env.smartygrants.com.au.
WA's upcoming e-waste ban, which is expected to be implemented later this year, will cover most electronic consumer goods, including major household appliances, mobile phones, televisions and computers.
